The Best Months to Get Married in Virginia (2026 Seasonal Guide)

Virginia gives you four real seasons and five distinct climates, which is a good problem to have. Late September through October is Virginia's peak wedding season, and for good reason: crisp air, low humidity, and the Blue Ridge turning color. May and early June are the strong spring alternative. Season by season

Spring (April to early June)

Spring is beautiful across the whole state, with dogwoods and redbuds in the Piedmont and mild temperatures before summer humidity sets in. It is peak season and priced accordingly.

The thing to plan around is pollen. Virginia's spring pollen, heavy on oak and pine through much of the Piedmont and Northern Virginia, tends to peak from early April into early May. It coats outdoor surfaces (including cars, tents, and, memorably, wedding-party clothing) and can be rough on guests with allergies. If you are set on an April outdoor ceremony in Central or Northern Virginia, build in a plan for it. Late May and early June usually clear the worst of it while staying ahead of full summer heat.

Summer (mid-June to August)

Summer in Virginia is where the region you choose matters most. In Tidewater and Hampton Roads, and across Southside, July and August are genuinely hot and humid, with heat indices that can make midday outdoor ceremonies uncomfortable. On the coast the ocean and bay take some edge off, but the humidity is real.

The Shenandoah Valley and the Blue Ridge are the summer escape hatch: mountain elevations run noticeably cooler, especially in the evening, which is exactly why so many of Virginia's barn and vineyard venues cluster there. Fall (September to November)

Fall is Virginia at its best and its busiest. Late September and October bring cool, dry, low-humidity days, and the Blue Ridge foliage peaks from mid to late October, which is the single most-requested window in the state. Book early and expect peak pricing.

Two things to watch. First, that popularity means the best mountain and wine-country venues near Charlottesville and the Blue Ridge go 12 to 18 months out for October Saturdays. Second, on the coast and the Eastern Shore, September and October fall inside Atlantic hurricane season (see below). November cools off and quiets down, and it is an underrated value month with often-still-pleasant weather in the eastern half of the state.

Winter (December to March)

Winter splits sharply by region. Tidewater, Hampton Roads, and Southside stay relatively mild, with many days well above freezing, which makes an indoor coastal winter wedding both affordable and low-risk. Northern Virginia, the Shenandoah Valley, and the Blue Ridge get genuinely cold and see periodic snow and ice, which is romantic for a lodge or manor wedding but adds a travel-risk element for guests.

Across the board, winter is the value season: venue discounts of 20 to 40 percent versus peak Saturdays are common. The coastal hurricane window

If you are marrying on the coast, in Virginia Beach, Norfolk, or out on the Eastern Shore at Cape Charles or Chincoteague, keep the Atlantic hurricane season (June 1 to November 30, most active August through October) on your radar. A direct hit is unlikely on any given date, but the real risk is a passing storm bringing days of wind and rain around your weekend. 1. Start with your region, then your season. The right month in the Blue Ridge (October) is not the right month on the coast (where you might prefer May to dodge both humidity and hurricane season). Decide where first.
2. Weigh peak beauty against peak price. October delivers the best weather and the highest cost. If your budget is the priority, a November or a late-winter date buys a lot of room.
3. Match the weather to your ceremony plan. Outdoor-only ceremony? Avoid peak Piedmont pollen in April and peak Tidewater humidity in July. Have an indoor backup regardless.
4. Book peak dates early. For an October or May Saturday at a sought-after wine-country or mountain venue, plan on inquiring 12 to 18 months ahead.
